Introduction to Lessons in Positivity

Dear Friend,
Here is an introduction to the

Lessons in Positivity

Welcome dear friends. The bulk of these lessons are based on my own material. The arrangement of topics is also mine. The material of these lessons incorporate content from many sources which I mention here. Training notes from my USP Trainings. These are conducted by Shri. Ujwal Uke, IAS now Retired; Book Power of Your Sub-conscious Mind by Joseph Murphy; Book the Genie Within by Harry W. Carpenter; Affirmations from books of Louise L Hay; and Success Principles by Jack Canfield. I convey my grateful thanks for what I have learnt from them all.

These are lessons from my book - My Little Handbook for Positivity Participants distributed to participants of my workshops on Positivity.

Do these two exercises for a week alongside reading these lessons. It will make easy learning and practice.

List some twenty things you do every day - brushing teeth, combing hair, drinking tea, buttoning shirt / blouse, tying laces, stepping on to staircase, closing the door, lifting anything, creaming face, soaping body, stirring tea, crossing leg etc. Now use the other hand, leg, order, method to do these things. The idea is to do many things in a different way.

Eat one meal a day slowly, deliberately, exclusively and attentively.

Practicing these lessons bolster confidence, motivation, self image, self esteem, health, wellness. A major change is in the way we look at ourselves, others, life, problems, difficulties and challenges of life. I wish you all well and cheer.

Please feel free to contact me on whatsapp for clarifications.

With my regards and best wishes,

06. States of Consciousness

06. States of Consciousness

We have seen in an earlier blog titled 'The Genie Within' The Genie Within, that our mind can be divided into three parts. These parts are the conscious, the sub-conscious and the unconscious. The contents of these parts and how they function and serve us is explained in the blog.

Now we are proceeding to the topic of states of consciousness. They are named or labelled Beta, Theta, Delta and Alpha States of Consciousness.

Beta State of Consciousness : In this state we are wide awake. We can see, hear, feel, smell and taste. Our rational and logical mind is  also functioning in this state.

Theta State of Consciousness : The theta state of consciousness is marked by we being able to bounce back to the beta state by stimuli sensed by ear and touch. We are likely to be awakeend by the ring of our phone, a knock on the door, someone calling out our name, or by someone touching us / shaking us. We revert to the beta state when the stimulus crosses a tipping point.

Delta State of Consciousness : This is the state we experience when we are in deep sleep. We are not awakened by mild or moderate stimuli of the types listed above. The sensory centres of our brain have been shut down and only autonomous functions (functions of the heart, lungs, and other internal organs) are working.

Alpha State of Consciousness : This is a patch of consciousness between the Beta State and the Theta State. It is experienced by us when we are drowsy, deeply relaxed, in the moments before falling asleep, during the few moments when we are waking up, or when we are day dreaming.

These then are the four states of consciousness. A person who has mastered the art of practicing positivity has learnt techniques to message the subconscious using the Alpha State of Consciousness.

We are human beings. We have many interconnected aspects. These are:
      1. Physical
      2. Mental
      3. Emotional
      4. Psychological
      5. Intellectual
Our well being, motivation and do-act attitude is controlled by hormones and mind orientation. So also the aforementioned aspects.

05. The Story of Siddharamaiah

Lessons in Positivity
05. The Story of Siddharamiah

Siddharamaiah, who I refer to as Siddhu, represents any person. Any of us really. Though each of us is different, and our circumstances are different, we all surely have very many commonalities.

Siddhu lived as an ordinary child. An elderly person near his house, told him the story of a woman, who found a corked bottle on the beach. Siddhu was around ten years old then. She was a rag picker. When she pulled open the bottle, a genie sprang out of it. It granted the woman all her wishes.

Siddhu was impressed. He could not forget the story much as he tried. In time he grew up to live close to the beach. He would spend a few hours every weekend searching for the much sought corked bottle that would change his destiny. Years rolled by. Siddhu grew old. He continued his search energetically. Slowly, unhappiness started creeping in. He wondered if this dream of his would ever come true.

Many years later he finally found a corked bottle. He kept looking at it for a long time. He wondered if there was a genie inside for real. He gathered courage and pulled out the cork. A genie appeared out of nowhere in particular. The genie said to the old man. Siddhu, “I am here to grant you whatever you want.”

“Whatever I want?” Siddhu asked.

“Well,” said the genie, “almost anything." "You are old and have never been in politics. So it is unlikely that you can become a political leader, nor a sports person, nor can you enjoy being the father of many children. Also, I cannot give you something which belongs to another.

Siddhu blamed himself for not finding the bottle earlier.

The genie said to Siddhu. Master, I have been with you, and granting your wishes, all of your life. I was not in that bottle. You must be wondering, "How is that?" It is so, because I am your subconscious mind. Let me tell you some facts of your life that will convince you.

Remember when you were six and you wished your father would pay more attention to you? You cut your finger. That was no accident. Your father washed the cut and held you. Remember? You thought your father didn't love you. But it was you who strayed away. I helped you in that.

Then later on, he was supporting you in your studies but you did not take interest.  You thought education was no good. I helped you to do trading, remember? I helped you in that too.

You kept telling yourself that you were not smart and would not do well. You wanted magic to happen, good fortune to fall your way. I brought new people to you. They offered good opportunities. But you were suspicious.

“I am glad you have found me and discovered who I am. Now you will learn to make wishes that are well thought out and good. Now we can work together. Together we can stay healthy, find peace, and enjoy the richness of life. I will teach you the principles, methods and ways. You can use them freely.  I will grant you peace, prosperity, and happiness.” "You can now have many of your unfulfilled wishes fulfilled."

04. The Genie Within

The Genie Within is a name for our subconscious mind.

representing the three different parts of our mind.

The genie is a spirit of arabian folklore, traditionally depicted as imprisoned within a bottle or oil lamp, and capable of granting wishes when summoned.

Tap / click this link Genie to see how a genie looks like.

Our mind is divided into three parts. They are:
  1. The Conscious Mind
  2. The Sub-conscious Mind and
  3. The Unconscious Mind
They help us understand what each part represents and what it contains.

The conscious mind represents easily accessible memories and information.

The sub-conscious mind represents information that is unawarely stored. This information is collected from what / how we think, reason, conclusions we make and our responses. It is constantly getting recorded. It is continually shaping our thinking, feeling, orientation to reality and capacity to cope with events and happenings.

The unconscious mind represents repressed memories. When we consciously push away thoughts and / or feelings  about a person, thing, experience, observation or conclusion it gets buried as a memory. This process of burying is called suppression. Multiple times of suppression of the same type of memory or strongly pushing it away from memory causes its repression. While suppression occurs when we consciously force thoughts and feelings out of our conscious awareness, repression occurs when impulses, thoughts, feelings and  emotions are unconsciously pushed out of awareness. An example will explain the difference - A person may take calculated risks in stock trading. He will be setting aside fears consciously. The fears are suppressed. Another person may recklessly take risks in the same circumstances. His fear is repressed.  When repression takes place we deny ourself the ability to re-experience. It however shapes our psyche - the manner in which we perceive, evaluate, assess and conclude things about people, incidents, events, occurrences and experiences.  These conclusions shape our responses, motivation, self image and self esteem.

In learning positivity we study the working, functions, operations and shaping of our sub-conscious mind. We learn methods to train it to work to our advantage and serve us much like the genie!

03. Why Learn Positivity

Lessons in Positivity
03. Why Learn Positivity

We are called upon to deal with a variety of situations in every day life. Coping, reality testing, problem solving, making sane choices, decision making and situation management are its important components. Learning positivity helps us to gain improvement in these areas. Positivity also helps us to shape our sub-conscious mind.

We are at times forced to face situations in life that are challenging. Our best self is called to act so that we can end the situation quickly, sanely, safely and effectively. And, then return to a quiet, peaceful, equipoised state of mind. This helps us to give our best every single time.

The qualities of a healthy mind are given in the previous blog. Its characteristics are repeated here for sake of emphasis:
    • positive
    • optimistic
    • constructive
    • motivating
    • self-esteem promoting
    • result oriented and
    • solution oriented
These are generated over time by what we talk and the way we talk to ourself when we land in many situations. It is also generated by words we use, the sentence structures, the attached optimism and hope, the accompanying self-confidence and self-image among many other factors. It is mostly dependent on the mix of hormones that are in our blood stream and released as soon as any situation arises. People having positivity as the primary mind orientation are rewarded with* :
    • A better life span
    • Lower rates of depression
    • Lower levels of distress
    • Better immunity
    • Resilience
    • Better physical, emotional and psychological well-being
    • A healthy heart and decreased risk of heart ailments
    • Better coping skills in times of hardship and stress
    • Reduced anxiety and distress and
    • Display of reliability

Positivity is our mind orientation. We can study it by ongoing observation and change it by practicing positivity. We can  achieve better mental and bodily health, and we can also start performing better as a person free of stress and fatigue by learning and practicing positivity.

01. Understanding our Mind

Mind is something that is difficult to define in specific terms. However, it is not that difficult to say what the mind does. Our mind enables us to have subjective awareness. It helps us to perceive stimuli and respond to them. It grants us consciousness with the help of thinking and feeling. It grants intentionality (a capacity to act with purpose)It also grants us some other capacities. They are memory, imagination, means of communication using language, judgement and using logic and rationality. Taken from Mind-Wikipedia.
